Bringing home a new pet can be one of the most exciting and overwhelming experiences. Potty training, socialization, training, vet visits, and more can feel like a lot. Here are a few tips to make it feel manageable.

  1. Set aside a designated space for your new pet as they acclimate to your home over the first few days and weeks. For a dog or puppy, this often takes the form of a crate with bedding and toys. For cats, a separate room set up with food dishes, litter box and toys is ideal.
  2. If you’re integrating your new pet with previously owned pets, it’s extra important to give them all their own space. It can also be beneficial to keep a gate or a door between the pets for the first few days.
  3. Purchase initial supplies, such as dishes, adjustable collars and toys, ahead of time so you don’t need to scramble for them once your pet is home. This ensures you can spend quality time with your new pet instead of running errands.
  4. Keep the first few days at home quiet and relaxed. We know it can be tempting to invite everyone over to meet your new pet, but that can be very overwhelming and scary. Let them get used to their new environment and new family first, then gradually introduce to family and friends.
  5. Establish care with a veterinarian early. Find a vet you trust, or get your new pet established at your current vet to ensure you’re able to keep up with their vaccines schedule or get care in an emergency.
