Our pets are our family, so it’s natural to want to include them in our holiday traditions. Here are a few tips for having a safe Thanksgiving while including our pets in the gathering.

  • Keep food away from pets as many Thanksgiving dishes are toxic to them.
    • Foods with high fat content can be dangerous for pets, even small amounts of turkey skin can cause serious issues like pancreatitis.
    • Several common items used in Thanksgiving dinner are toxic to pets. Grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, chocolate, and artificial sweeteners xylitol, and birch sugar.
  • Never give dogs turkey bones to chew on. Cooked bones easily splinter and can get caught in the dog’s throat. This can cause serious damage to the esophagus, stomach, and intestines.
  • To help include your pet in the holiday, prepare their own special snack ahead of time. A stuffed Kong or snuffle mat filled with their favorite snacks is a great way to make them special.
  • Always keep the number for your nearest emergency vet handy in case your pet gets into something they shouldn’t.
